In many parts of the world, it is possible to build with local natural stone. The physical properties of natural stone vary widely based on the number of stone types; there is a suitable natural stone for almost every building material requirement. It is non-flammable and requires no impregnation, nor coating or protective coating. The stones are aesthetically pleasing and each one is unique. Due to it’s multiple different colors, structures and surfaces, the architects always difficult to make a decision. Therefore, the basic distinguishing characteristics, development process, physical characteristics, application examples and design variations should be understood.
Natural stone is divided into three categories based on its age and how it was formed:
1. Magma-tic rock :
For example, granite is a solidified rock that forms the oldest natural rock groups, consisting of liquid lava, etc. Igneous rocks are considered particularly hard and dense. The oldest granite found in meteorites to date formed 4.53 billion years ago.
2. Sediments, such as limestone and sandstone (also called sedimentary rocks):
Originated in a more recent geological era, formed from sediments on land or in water. Sedimentary rocks are much softer than igneous rocks. However, limestone deposits in China also date back to 600 million years ago.
3. Metamorphic rocks, such as slate or marble.
Includes rock species composed of sedimentary rocks that have undergone a transformation process. These rock types are of the most recent geological age. Slate formed about 3.5 to 400 million years ago.
Marble is a metamorphic rock composed of recrystallized carbonate minerals, most commonly calcite or dolomite.In geology, the term marble refers to metamorphic limestone, but its use in masonry more broadly includes unmodified limestone. Marble is often used in sculpture and building materials. Marble attract the attention of consumers with their gorgeous appearance and practical features. According to the basic color of polished surface, marble produced in China can be roughly divided into seven series: white, yellow, green, gray, red, coffee and black.China is extremely rich in marble mineral resources, with large reserves and many varieties, and its total reserves rank among the top in the world. According to incomplete statistics, there are nearly 400 varieties of Chinese marble been explored so far.
